The hotel's dining, space, and the staff's response from arrival to departure were all very satisfactory. While I don't think it's an issue with the hotel itself, I would like to summarize three points that I noticed during this trip. <Dining> - Dinner: A delicious meal that carefully used seasonal ingredients with a focus on local production for local consumption. I felt much better after a slight discomfort. The White Butter from Tanna and the seasonally limited Sakura Butter were delightful, and the perfectly cooked, tender fillet was truly delicious. There was absolutely no hint of awkwardness or unpleasant results due to misunderstanding health, it was exactly the grounded, fresh, and reliable cuisine I was looking for. Thank you to the chef. - Breakfast: Just like dinner, the meal made good use of local ingredients. Several types of colorful fresh juices were perfect to wake me up in the morning and lifted my spirits. In addition to homemade dressing for the salad, they provided several types from Aggre. The apple dressing was very tasty. The tea porridge was too bland for my personal taste, having only the saltiness from salmon; it could have benefited from more dashi or similar. The omelet was beautifully presented and delicious as always. Since I'm used to drinking lemongrass from my balcony, the tea bag herbal tea wasn’t tasty. I imagined a beautiful herbal tea in heat-resistant glass from Akao Forest, but my expectations were perhaps too high. Additionally, while side menus can be ordered as desired, some items like the sausages, although tasty, are quite large, so I recommend considering additional orders after you try the food. <Space> - Located on a steep path from Atami Station, the view overlooking Atami Bay is amazing. It can be enjoyed not just from the dining area but also from the baths and rooms (ocean side). This alone adds value, and apparently, you can see fireworks during certain seasons. - True to its name, Gran Bach, the space is filled with music inspired by Bach's works, which is pleasant to the ears. During dinner, live performances allowed us to enjoy classic pieces that even those tone-deaf could recognize. The room had a Balmuda Bluetooth speaker, allowing us to stream our favorite music from smartphones or other devices. - The room was clean enough that you could lie directly on the floor, and the air purifier was well-maintained and odor-free. If I were to nitpick, it would be the bathroom. It was very clean, but due to the hot springs, the humidity often makes it feel slightly stuffy (though it is clean enough that it doesn’t become unpleasant). - Even on a Thursday weekday without fireworks, it was surprising to find drinks in the refrigerator were free at this price. In addition to water, local juices and beers were also complimentary. Since they were delicious, I ended up taking home everything except the tea. <The Staff> - Although it was late, past 7:30 PM, I was warmly welcomed. - The local stories I heard during my meal were enjoyable. - Including the expressions behind their masks, everyone displayed excellent stability. <Three Points of Concern> 1) Location: For someone in their 40s like me, Atami feels too much like a typical tourist destination, with too few places I want to visit beyond nature. 2) Dining: While there are many places nationwide where you can enjoy fresh seafood, nowadays with developed logistics, there are few things I feel compelled to visit Atami for, except for special items that are only available locally. I feel it’s really about how the ingredients are utilized to elevate the dishes. 3) Infection Control: Everyone in all shops, including the hotel, was wearing masks. While masks may have some effectiveness against droplet infection, they do not work at all against airborne (aerosol) COVID transmission. How much longer will surgical masks be continued? The more they are enforced, the more counterproductive it has become (with a surge in infections and COVID deaths). Have we oversubscribed to the recommendations of the experts who have promoted infection control measures that seemingly lead to the opposite outcomes? Though the excuse is that COVID has mutated, experts pointed out from the start that COVID is prone to mutation and that vaccines would be ineffective after mutation, yet the specialists dismissed this as misinformation. From the perspective of a maskless customer, being served while the staff wears a mask and places an acrylic partition in front of me makes one feel like the customer is regarded as the source of pathogens and viruses, which is quite unpleasant. If the intention is to continue with masks, please clearly communicate that "customers who wish to be unmasked in areas other than their rooms may not be accommodated for the safety and security of other guests."
