“Essentially an over-priced hostel”
I will start with the good - my room had a beautiful view of the bay (photo included) and was spacious with a working aircon. The hotel is also close to Izusan shrine and is in a quiet residential neighbourhood. There was a nice tiered deck outside that apparently hosts musical performances at different times of the year, but none were running on the nights I stayed. The hotel also has a small common room where you can store food in the fridge or freezer. They had a small menu of food or drinks that could be ordered but I didn't use it. The bathroom also had some nice soaps, shampoos, and conditioners that were free to use and smelled lovely. The room also provided complimentary yukata and a hair dryer. Access: The hotel can be accessed by a 10 minute taxi ride from JR Atami station for about ¥1000, or you can take a local bus bound for Izusan central station or Izusan jingu. But be warned the buses are infrequent (1-2 per hour and none after 8 PM). You can also walk from the station but it's almost 2 km. Not an ideal situation if you are traveling with luggage. The hotel is not accessible. My taxi driver had no idea where to drop me off because to reach the hotel you need to climb 100 steps (see photo). There is no road access. Getting to the beach or really anything of interest to tourists will take about 30 minutes of walking and the route is very hilly (not such a problem on the way there, but very tiring on the way back!) And now, the bad: While the room was spacious, the walls were paper thin. I heard every cough from the room next door. There are also train tracks that run behind the hotel with trains going by every few mins. If you are a light sleeper, bring ear plugs. There is no staff on site. I tried reaching out on Instagram in Japanese and English, but received no response. An emergency phone number is provided, but I did not try calling it. The floors of the hallway leading to my room were very soft. You could feel them sinking with each step if you walked in the middle. There was also a long dead hunstman spider sitting in the windowsill next to my room, which may explain why there was a cockroach in my bathroom. The bathroom is the size of a shower stall which could be a problem if you are a larger person. It was definitely not fun when the cockroach made a surprise appearance while I was showering (twice!). Two large and one small towel were provided but one of my towels had holes in it (photo attached). The mattress was one of the harder ones I've slept on in Japan. I like a firm mattress, but this one made for an uncomfortable sleep (the pillows were nice though and the futon very fluffy). I really wanted to like this place, but I struggle to justify the price (over ***/night) given the cockroaches, torn towels, and lack of road access. I am well travelled and have stayed in many different hotels and hostels over the years. It's rare that I would not recommend a place, but I could not in good conscience recommend 123Music at the price I paid unless they took care of the bug situation and remedied the overall care/cleanliness of the facility. I hope they will make these changes because the hotel has much potential and seems invested in bettering their community through various events and charitable services.
